Dr Smith’s specialist interest is mitral and tricuspid valve disease and interventions. He leads one of the largest structural heart disease programmes in Europe at the world-renowned Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals. He leads a team that were appointed the first Abbott Centre of Excellence for MitraClip (TEER) in the world.

Dr Smith is highly skilled and one of the most experienced mitral and tricuspid interventionalists in the UK. With experience of more than 500 transcatheter edge-to-edge repair procedures, he is the highest volume implanter in the UK and delivers training to other teams both nationally and internationally. He works within a team at the cutting edge of transcatheter intervention, evaluating multiple new devices and techniques to treat higher risk mitral patients. He has experience with MitraClip, Pascal, AccuCinch, NeoChord, Tendyne, Sapien and numerous other established and novel therapies.

Dr Smith is also experienced in coronary angioplasty and stenting, cardiac catheterisations, permanent pacemaker implantation and alcohol septal ablation.

Dr Smith trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School in London, qualifying in 1999. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and was awarded an M.D from the University of London in 2008. He has trained many doctors in cardiology and coronary intervention and was voted British Junior Cardiologists’ Association Trainer of the Year in 2017. He was trained in interventional cardiology at Harefield and The Hammersmith Hospitals, before being appointed as a Consultant in 2010.

Dr Smith is involved in multiple research studies and projects relating to coronary artery intervention and structural heart disease. He is the Principal Investigator for the CorCinch study of the novel AccuCinch left ventricular modelling system and an investigator for the Millipede annuloplasty ring feasibility study. He is an investigator for the upcoming TRISCEND UK study of the Evoque transfemoral tricuspid valve replacement system. He is currently working on behalf of the British Society of Cardiovascular Intervention (BCIS) to establish a registry of all transcatheter mitral valve replacements in the UK over a 5-year period.

Dr Smith has an active academic interest in clinical outcomes following transcatheter mitral valve intervention and regularly publishes data from the UK’s largest TEER patient cohort at The Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals.
